The Complete Guide to Vegan & Plant-Based Food at Borough Market

16 August 2025

Borough Market is London's oldest and most famous food market, and it has come a long way for vegans. What was once a temple of cheese and charcuterie now hosts a growing number of stalls dedicated to plant-based food. Here is your guide to eating vegan at Borough Market.

Where to Eat

Arabica serves Middle Eastern food with plenty of vegan options — their falafel wrap with pickled turnip and tahini is one of the best things you can eat at the market. Kappacasein may be famous for cheese toasties, but nearby Bao Borough does incredible steamed buns with mushroom and tofu fillings.

Horn OK Please is a standout for vegan Indian street food — their masala dosa and vada pav are excellent. Lankan Filling Station serves Sri Lankan curry with coconut sambol that is naturally vegan and utterly addictive. For something sweet, Bread Ahead now does a vegan doughnut that rivals the original.

Vegan Shopping

Borough Market is brilliant for stocking up on vegan ingredients. The Mushroom Man sells wild and exotic mushrooms that elevate any dish. Turnips has seasonal British vegetables. Several olive and oil stalls offer tastings. The fruit stalls are exceptional, and you will find specialty items like fresh dates, exotic citrus, and heritage tomatoes.

For vegan cheese, look for I Am Nut OK and similar artisan producers who occasionally appear at the market. The nut-based cheeses are genuinely impressive and make a great alternative to the dairy cheesemongers.

Tips for Visiting

  • Go early: The market opens at 10am (8am on Saturdays). Go early to avoid the worst crowds.
  • Weekdays are quieter: Wednesday to Friday is much less busy than Saturday.
  • Ask for vegan options: Many stalls can adapt dishes. Do not be afraid to ask.
  • Bring a bag: Reduce waste by bringing your own bags and containers.
