Position Objective:
To provide research assistance relating to global animal-testing issues in order to support PETA’s advocacy on behalf of animals used in experiments
Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
• Analyze technical papers and translate scientific terminology into lay terms for use in research projects and campaigns
• Identify, review, and develop recommendations for non-animal testing methods through analysis of scientific literature and other data sources
• Draft and obtain the necessary data for letters, factsheets, white papers, reports, government comments, and other types of correspondence
• Attend scientific conferences and communicate with scientists regarding issues relating to experiments on animals and non-animal research methods, as needed
• Present complex and potentially controversial information and recommendations and represent the organization in dealings with state and federal agencies, public- and private-sector organizations, international forums, multinational companies, media, and advocacy and special-interest groups
• Work with government agencies to obtain information on specific animal tests
• Answer correspondence regarding animal-testing issues
• Research and interpret animal-protection legislation related to animal testing
• Collaborate with other staffers to research and develop public campaign and marketing materials for casework
• Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor
Qualifications:
• MD, VMD, or PhD in a related field and several years of relevant experience
• Proven familiarity with and the ability to apply medical and scientific terminology
• Demonstrated ability to conduct in-depth research
• Proven exceptional written and verbal communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to interact with government agencies and members of the public in a professional manner
• Proven ability to make sound, independent judgments
• Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
• Demonstrated ability to handle many issues simultaneously
• Professional appearance and adherence to a healthy vegan lifestyle
• Ability and willingness to travel
• Must have a valid U.S. driver’s license, a minimum of three years of driving experience, and a satisfactory driving record
• Support for PETA’s philosophy and the ability to professionally advocate PETA’s positions on issues
• Commitment to the objectives of the organization
